Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MBGrand Chief Garrison Settee today issued a statement in response to Andrew Sheer, Conservative leader views on indigenous relations and resource development.

Grand Chief stated while he is disappointed about the lack of Mr Sheer’s understanding of Treaty Crown Relations and the Duty to consult and accommodate frameworks.

Grand Chief remains adamant that the present and future context of First Nation & Crown relationships should continue to be based on mutual respect and understanding. These guiding principles will ensure economic and cultural interests are met at all political tables throughout all phases of resource development projects.

We encourage all party leaders to fully respect and engage in partnerships with First Nations governments. At the earliest onset, no matter the scope, scale and duration of any proposed projects. We have demonstrated time and time again that we are willing and capable partners in wealth creation and in building a stronger North, especially for MKO Northern Territory.

MKO will continue to build, advocate and foster relationships that honour and respect our treaty and inherent rights over our homelands and resources.
