Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB – Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO) is issuing this statement on behalf of Chief David Monias of Pimicikamak Cree Nation in Northern Manitoba.
“Today the Chief and Executive Council of Pimicikamak Cree Nation and the Mayor and Council of the incorporated community of Cross Lake have declared a state of emergency due to a loss of hydro-electric power throughout the First Nation,” stated Chief Monias. “We are very concerned about the well-being of the Elders, the dialysis patients, the sick, and the very young people in Pimicikamak and Cross Lake.”
The power has been off since Saturday, October 26. Pimicikamak Cree Nation and Cross Lake have been experiencing a winter storm over the weekend. Manitoba Hydro has communicated with Chief and Executive Council that they hope the power can be restored by 10 pm this evening, however, the impacted hydro line is in the water. Manitoba Hydro cannot guarantee that hydro will be restored by this evening.
“We are acting in the best interests of our vulnerable citizens,” said Chief Monias. “While we do hope that hydro will be restored later today, we need to take necessary precautions to protect the lives of our community members by evacuating them out of the community as soon as possible.”
