Traditional Healer Program

Traditional Healer Program

Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO) has hired a Program Supervisor specifically for the Traditional Healer Program at the beginning of May 2018. A NIHB Analyst will be added for the program also. The Traditional Healer Program will commence plans to implement the access of services to the population of NIHB eligible clients for their mental health counseling/healing needs by Providers using traditional approaches. MKO will ensure client safe access to such services by determining Providers capacity and eligibility to provide such services. MKO intends to provide services to the following individuals (clients), all NIHB eligible members living on and off reserve in Manitoba. MKO will provide compensation to such Providers in a form and manner that is appropriate to their traditional roles. This aspect to be determined with feedback from the engagements. This may include consideration for ancillary costs for services (e.g. supplies, designated helpers) as required. MKO plans to have engagement sessions for input into the transition of the Traditional Healer services with the First Nations and Tribal Councils. Feedback from engagement will be designed into the Transformation Final Plan. A communication strategy will be established to keep Manitoba First Nations informed of the program.

Funding is provided by the First Nations & Inuit Health Branch for the Traditional Healer Program as part the transitioning of the Non-Insured Health Benefits. The overall goal of the Traditional Healer Program is to become part of an Indigenous Health Entity (Authority) for Manitoba First Nations & Inuit populations. Updates of the program will be added as they become available.
