Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO) commends the Government of Manitoba’s recently announced plan to address chronic homelessness, “Your Way Home.” Premier Wab Kinew’s strategy, highlighting compassion and structured collaboration, marks an important step toward ending homelessness across the province. However, to ensure the success of this initiative, MKO strongly urges the government to extend its focus to address the unique challenges faced by the northern regions of Manitoba.

MKO recognizes Minister Bernadette Smith’s commitment to engaging municipal and Indigenous governments and non-profit organizations in developing solutions tailored to the province’s needs. We share the vision for a Manitoba where everyone has access to safe and supportive housing. Yet, it must be acknowledged that northern communities face distinctive challenges that require targeted resources and approaches.

“We are grateful for the inclusive perspective shown by the provincial government and appreciate Minister Smith’s acknowledgment that all Manitobans, including those in the North, must be heard and served,” said MKO Grand Chief Garrison Settee. “Our communities have distinct needs related to housing, mental health, and addiction services, and it is essential that these are directly addressed in the initiatives designed to combat homelessness.”

The Premier’s plan, which begins in February with the transition of individuals from encampments into housing, is a commendable first step. MKO acknowledges the $20 million investment to enhance housing and services in Winnipeg yet stresses the importance of ensuring equitable distribution of resources throughout all regions, including northern Manitoba.

MKO looks forward to partnering with the provincial government and fellow stakeholders to adapt and implement the “Your Way Home” strategy to suit the northern context. We are excited about the potential for innovative solutions, such as community-specific supported housing and inclusivity in planning and execution.

Furthermore, we echo the sentiments of Tessa Blaikie Whitecloud regarding the strategy’s compassionate foundation. To build upon this, it is crucial to create spaces that are culturally safe and responsive to the diverse populations within the province.

While Manitoba embarks on this laudable journey of ending chronic homelessness, MKO is hopeful and prepared to collaborate fully with all levels of government and community partners. Together, we can transform Manitoba into a province where every individual, regardless of their locale, is provided the opportunity for a stable, healthy, and fulfilling life.
