Treaty Five Territory, Thompson, MB – Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) Inc. is issuing this statement in response to allegations of anti-Indigenous racism occurring with the Hudson Bay Railway.

Grand Chief Garrison Settee states:

“It is deeply concerning to hear allegations of anti-Indigenous racism at the Hudson Bay Railway. I commend the employees who are speaking up on this issue. It is not easy to come forward with these kinds of experiences.

I’m relieved to hear former Onekanew Christian Sinclair, of the Opaskwayak Cree Nation, has been appointed to conduct an independent review into the allegations of racism.

As First Nations citizens, we are constantly confronting racism in various sectors such as health, justice, education, etc. While institutions have begun developing anti-racism strategies, it would be encouraging to see a concerted effort to address racism at a systemic level.

As we can see from recent events across Canada, there is much work to do in addressing racism and confronting white supremacy.”
