Cross Lake Band/Pimicikamak Cree Nation is pleased to announce the organization of Mamawitenamatowin, a summer healing camp for residential school Survivors in their territory of Pimicikamak. The camp will take place at Sand Bay Park, located on the east side of the reserve.
“The past year has uncovered numerous unmarked graves located at former residential schools across Canada,” said Chief David Monias of the Pimicikamak Cree Nation. “The focus of the Mamawitenamatowin Summer Healing Camp is to continue to facilitate the healing journeys of the residential school Survivors, especially in light of these findings. Cross Lake is undertaking its own search for unmarked graves beginning on July 11, 2022. During the Summer Healing Camp, there will be a tour of the search site, including the observation of a search.”
There will be various events organized during the week including healing workshops, self care, sharing circles, and numerous fun activities for all ages. The Sand Bay camp site has space for campers and recreational vehicles (RVs). All amenities normally available in the camp site will be provided, including potable water and porta potties.
Organizers invite all Survivors who attended St Joseph’s Residential School or another residential school to join the Nation at the Mamawitenamatowin Summer Healing Camp, along with their families. Anyone and everyone are invited to attend.
The Cree word “Mamawitenamatowin” means “supporting each other through our hearts” (on the land).
Organizers encourage media to attend and gather stories from Survivors. The Summer Healing Camp is taking place one week prior to Pope Francis’ visit to Canada.
