MKO is seeking a Justice Navigator, Under the direction of the Justice Triage Coordinator, the Justice Navigator will guide individuals through the justice system and help them overcome barriers that prevent them from accessing the supports and information they need. Justice Navigators will provide accessible, wrap-around services to individuals and families in a culturally responsive and intervention focused manner. Justice Navigators will provide reintegration support for individuals returning to their families and/or their communities.

Located in Thompson, MB, the MKO Justice Navigation Hub will provide access to information, awareness and support for individuals and families attempting to navigate the Criminal Justice System (CJS) in northern Manitoba through a culturally appropriate and responsive lens.

Role and Responsibilities
• Address barriers through knowledge and information sharing and bring awareness to individuals and families about the formal Criminal Justice System and its processes.
• Facilitate communication between individuals and families in the justice process to ensure information, comprehension and understanding is complete and accurate.
• Provide information about legal and justice-related services and assist individuals and families to access these services, supports and resources, such as Legal Aid and Victim Services.
• Assist and support consenting individuals and families access community resources, services, and programs such as mental health, addictions, counselling, and other culturally responsive programming and interventions.
• Help individuals and families either as a worker or as a supporter.
• Assist consenting individuals and families with timely wrap-around supports and services that can help them address problems that may have brought them into conflict with the justice system.
• Provide culturally responsive services and supports for individuals and families with a goal to prevent further issues and escalation.
• Support individuals in a culturally responsive manner who are reintegrating back with their family and/or their community from an institutional or correctional setting.
• Assist with release and reintegration planning, providing basic needs, obtaining identification, forms & applications assistance, and community resource information.
• Provide ongoing support to identify goals and mitigate challenges.
• Offer support for individuals and families with a goal to reduce re-offending behavior.
• Provide and assist with accessing culturally responsive early intervention support and services.
• Participate in MKO Chiefs Assemblies, staff meetings and other internal meetings as necessary and required.
• Enhance professional development through attendance at professional development courses/workshops, evaluate content and share results (learning). Learn new office technology when introduced and implement new systems and procedures, as necessary.
• Adhere to MKO policies, procedures and protocols.
• Ability to work independently.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
• Minimum Grade 12 Diploma or Equivalency.
• Knowledge of Justice issues impacting First Nation people.
• Experience in Case Planning and Needs Assessments.
• Experience working in the Justice field.
• Experience working in remote Indigenous and Northern communities.
• Strong initiative and ability to work independently and as a team member.
• Strong organizational, prioritization and time-management skills.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal and social skills.
• Exceptional team player with a strong ability to contribute positively to a team environment.
• Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
• Valid class 5 drivers’ license and access to a reliable vehicle.
• Ability to travel and work flexible hours as required.
• Proficient computer skills and the ability to use Microsoft Office, Excel, Power point and Outlook.
• Satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Child and Adult Abuse Registry Checks.
• Produce a satisfactory criminal record, child and adult abuse registry and vulnerable sector checks.
