Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO) is inviting applications from First Nation candidates for the position of Traditional Medicine Knowledge Keeper. We are seeking an individual to assume the vital role of Traditional Medicine Knowledge Keeper, with a strong focus on First Nation culture and practices. As part of the Northern project support team, the Traditional Medicine Knowledge Keeper will work closely with the Senior Health Analyst to contribute to the development, planning, and implementation of Traditional Healing initiatives within the Northern region.

The successful candidate will actively engage in collaborative planning and relationship building with our valued First Nations partners and communities. Through their deep understanding and knowledge of Traditional Medicine, the Traditional Medicine Knowledge Keeper will play a key role in fostering cultural continuity and revitalization. They will also contribute to the Clinical Preventative Services Plan (CPSP), aiming to provide essential healthcare services to our communities.

Working closely with our diverse team, the Traditional Medicine Knowledge Keeper will help ensure that Indigenous perspectives are embedded within our approach, ensuring that our programs and services are culturally appropriate and respectful. This involves actively participating in the development and delivery of Traditional Healing programs and workshops, providing guidance and support to our team, as well as sharing traditional knowledge and practices to promote holistic wellness.

Roles and Responsibilities
Qualifications for this position include a strong connection to First Nation culture, demonstrated knowledge and experience in Traditional Medicine practices, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate will have a deep respect for Indigenous ways of knowing and a commitment to upholding cultural integrity. They will also possess the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with our partners and stakeholders.

• Support the development, planning and implementation of Traditional Medicine and Healing practices to be incorporated within CPSP Northern intermediate level services planning and programs;
• Liaise with Traditional Healing Practitioners;
• Build Traditional Medicine and healing network of Knowledge Keepers to ensure sharing of knowledge and expertise;
• Promote cultural understanding and culturally safe services;
• Lead discussions of Traditional Medicine Integrated Clinical Co-planning team (ICCT) on how to best integrate Traditional Medicine and healing practices in identified priorities;
• Align with project support team to align strategic approach for ICCTs and Northern Collaborative Working Team (NCWT);
• Provide an Indigenous holistic approach to health and wellness strategic planning and promote cultural understanding and culturally safe care committed to ending Indigenous specific racism in the North;
• Other duties as needed and assigned.

Knowledge and Skills
• Indigenous ancestry is required. Experience providing Indigenous traditional teachings, guidance, and mentorship;
• Experience performing Indigenous traditional ceremonies and prayer;
• Knowledge of the clinical environment;
• Knowledge of Intergenerational impacts of residential schools;
• Understanding of Indigenous specific racism and cultural safety;
• Knowledge of the UNDRIP, TRC Calls to Action and Calls to Justice;
• Awareness of trauma informed care;
• Respects and promotes a culturally diverse population;
• Effective verbal communication skills;
• Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and independently;
• Ability to bridge any gaps and have understanding and acceptance of Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures;
• Ability to effectively manage time;
• Ability to speak Cree or Dene is a definite asset;
• Produce a satisfactory criminal record, child and adult abuse registry and vulnerable sector checks;
• Valid Class 5 license and access to a reliable vehicle is required.


Salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience.
