Treaty Five Territory, Thompson, MB – Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) Inc. is issuing this statement to acknowledge and recognize the importance of International Women’s Day, which is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

Grand Chief Garrison Settee states:

“On behalf of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak, today and all days I lift up and recognize women for their essential roles in our communities. Today we celebrate the achievements and legacy of the strong women, girls, and Two Spirit people in MKO communities.

‘Choose to Challenge’ is the theme for International Women’s Day 2021. As a leader, I commit to challenging gender stereotypes, inequality, and bias. I commit to making space for and encouraging women in taking on and seeking leadership roles. I will continue to seek out and rely on guidance and lessons I am blessed to receive from women. I encourage others to choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequity. Let us seek out and celebrate women’s achievements.

I recognize and thank all the women at MKO who work tirelessly to make a positive impact on our communities. I also acknowledge all women Chiefs and Councillors who step up to take on these important roles providing leadership to their communities. You are an inspiration to all MKO community members, and I thank you for your ongoing service.

In recognition of the importance of amplifying women’s voices, I’m pleased to note that MKO will host a special press conference featuring female leaders from our MKO communities and from within our organization. I encourage everyone to tune in via our MKO Facebook page to hear from these inspirational leaders on March 9 at 11:30am.”
