MKO Applauds Federal Court’s Approval of Final Settlement Agreement on Compensation for First Nations Children and Families

Treaty Five Territory, Thompson, MBOn October 24, 2023, the Federal Court of Canada approved the revised final settlement agreement on compensation for First Nations children and families who experienced racial discrimination through Canada’s chronic underfunding of the on-reserve First Nations Child and Family Services Program and Jordan’s Principle.

The $23 billion settlement agreement is the largest ever in Canadian history.

“I applaud the decision of the Federal Court and I am optimistic other details related to the final settlement agreement, including the distribution protocol, will be approved later this week as part of the hearing process”, said MKO Grand Chief Garrison Settee.

“Compensation to First Nations children and families negatively impacted by Canada’s child welfare system is long overdue. Once the final settlement agreement is fully approved, the Government of Canada must fulfill its obligation by acting on the agreement and begin the process to disburse compensation.”
