Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MBManitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO) is issuing this statement in response to the results for the election for the Province of Manitoba.

“I’d like to send my congratulations to all newly elected and re-elected provincial representatives,” said Grand Chief Garrison Settee. “Running for office is not an easy task and I commend all those who have dedicated themselves to a life of public service.”

MKO had been encouraging Indigenous peoples to get out and vote in this election and is also encouraging Indigenous peoples to vote in the federal election in October 2019. MKO created a special webpage to provide clear information on how to vote in both elections. MKO also created a poster to raise awareness about the importance of voting.

“Living in a democratic society, we have the right to vote and to run for political office. I want to lift up and honour all Indigenous peoples who ran for office in the provincial election here in Manitoba. Regardless of whether you won your race or not, you a truly a winner in the eyes of other First Nations people who have been inspired by your campaign. I also thank all the Indigenous peoples who took the time to vote in the election today,” stated Grand Chief Settee.

MKO sends congratulations to Brian Pallister on his re-election as Premier of Manitoba. MKO and Grand Chief Garrison Settee look forward to continuing to work with Premier Pallister and his Cabinet in improving the quality of life for First Nations in Northern Manitoba.
