Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak’s (MKO) Child Welfare Secretariat is hosting a Chiefs’ Assembly from March 29 to 31, 2022 at the Hilton Winnipeg Airport Suites at 1800 Wellington Avenue in Winnipeg.

Agenda for Tuesday, March 29, 2022: DAY ONE

Day one includes a pipe ceremony and smudge, an opening ceremony including a grand entry and Dene drummers, welcoming remarks, a ceremony to honour youth, an update from MKO’s Child Welfare Secretariat, an update from MKO’s Chiefs’ Task Force on Child Welfare, info about the provincial homelessness strategy, info about proposed legislation to combat human trafficking and sexual exploitation, and info about the Toba Centre. There will also be work done on passing resolutions.

Agenda for Wednesday, March 30, 2022: DAY TWO

Day two includes a pipe ceremony, welcoming remarks, information about federal child welfare reform, a presentation from Chief Cadmus Delorme of the Cowessess First Nation, info about MKO’s Family Law, information about Jordan’s Principle, along with a presentation on long-term reform of the First Nations Child and Family Services Program: Considerations for the Program and Jurisdiction. There will also be work done on passing resolutions.

Day three includes a pipe ceremony and smudge, welcoming remarks, information about exercising jurisdiction and legislative authority in child and family services, info about Corcan from the Government of Canada, along with info on COVID-19 health protection measures. There will also be work done on passing resolutions.
