Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation Chief Angela Levasseur and Grand Chief Garrison Settee.

MKO Grand Chief Garrison Settee attended the inauguration ceremony for Chief Angela Levasseur, as she becomes the first female Chief of the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation in Northern Manitoba.

Until recently, Ms. Levasseur was a part of the MKO team, working with our Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Liaison Unit. During her time with MKO, her colleagues were so proud to see her become the first female lawyer for her community. You can read about her accomplishment here.

Grand Chief Settee shared the following reflections following Chief Levasseur’s inauguration ceremony, which was held on September 6, 2022:

“It was so good to be in the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation to witness history unfolding. The Nation has chosen a woman to be the leader for the next four years, which is a reflection of the vision of the people.

I was very honoured to be asked to take part. The ceremony was very meaningful and also emotional at times.”

MKO acknowledges the recently-elected Chief Levasseur as well as outgoing Chief Marcel Moody, who will now serve as an elected Councillor for the First Nation.

MKO also congratulates the following Councillors on being elected to represent your First Nation: Shirley Louise Linklater, Kim Linklater, Ron D. Spence, Cheryl Moore, and Jeremiah Spence.
