Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB – Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO) is issuing this statement on behalf of Chief Eric Redhead of Shamattawa First Nation in Northern Manitoba.
“The loss of a two-year-old child in Shamattawa is devasting to everyone in our community,” stated Chief Redhead. “Our children are sacred and the loss of this young boy is impacting everyone in our community. We are all experiencing shock and devastation. We are still trying to process the loss of this precious little life.”
The Shamattawa RCMP are investigating but foul play is not suspected. On September 21, 2019, the toddler was struck by a vehicle driven by a female member of the community. Drugs, alcohol, and speeding are not factors.
“This is an unfortunate accident,” said Chief Redhead. “We thank the media and others in advance for respecting members of our community by providing us with privacy as we go through our grieving.”
MKO’s Mobile Crisis Response Team and other resources are being deployed to assist community members impacted by this traumatic event.
Chief Redhead is asking for privacy for his community and for the family and friends of the child. MKO and Chief Redhead will not be providing any interviews on this issue at this time.
