TRAINING SESSION: Canadian Partnership Against Cancer
First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Initiative

HOLD THE DATE: FEBRUARY 19-20, 2020

CANCERCARE MANITOBA IS HOSTING THE COMMUNITY CONNECTOR TRAINING SESSION

Where: Mystery Lake Hotel, Thompson, Manitoba

Time: Feb. 19-20 from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm

Who should participate? Training is open to those First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities wanting to participate in the project. Ideally the Community Connector could be a nurse, health staff, cancer survivor, or a trusted member of the community who will be open to learning about all the information, services, and resources CancerCare Manitoba has available for clients. Expenses to attend the training such as travel and accommodations will be provided for one Community Connector per community. If your community is interested in having a Community Connector trained, please contact Brittany McKay by January 23, 2020.

Additional information: CancerCare Manitoba has received funds from the Canadian Partnership against Cancer to enhance access, knowledge, and patient experience for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit in Manitoba throughout the cancer continuum, from prevention & screening, through treatment all the way to survivorship or end of life care. This initiative is a collaboration of partners working together in an effort to improve First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cancer experiences in Manitoba.

By providing training to Community Connectors, they will have the knowledge and information to provide peer support and navigation to assist local patients and family members during their cancer experience. They will be a trusted member of the community who can help connect peers with resources and supports as needed. This role is community-driven and communities will help identify community-specific needs for this role. This initiative will provide comprehensive training for this role including information on cancer and cancer services that communities have identified as needed.

A steering committee has been developed to lead this project and provide feedback every step of the way. If you would like any additional information or have any questions please contact Brittany McKay at 204-784-2774 or email [email protected].
