Treaty Five Territory, Thompson, MB Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) Inc. is issuing this statement in recognition of the first female Premier of Manitoba, Heather Stefanson, who won a leadership race for the Progressive Conservative party in Manitoba today.

Ms. Stefanson replaces Mr. Kelvin Goertzen as the leader for Manitoba, who served as the interim Premier of Manitoba from September 1, 2021, until today.

MKO Grand Chief Settee states:

“On behalf of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc., I extend our congratulations to Heather Stefanson on becoming the first female Premier of Manitoba today. This is a historic achievement. In this leadership role, you have the opportunity to make a positive impact and to build reciprocal relationships with First Nations in Manitoba.

In the past year, we have witnessed anti-Indigenous racism coming out of the Premier’s office. Understandably, First Nations leaders had a challenging relationship with the Premier of Manitoba.

It was hopeful to see some improvements in the last two months under the leadership of interim Premier Kelvin Goertzen. We thank Mr. Goertzen for taking action during his short term in office. I’m hopeful his actions will inspire the incoming Premier to continue to listen and to engage with First Nations leaders on a regular basis.

I look forward to meeting with Premier Stefanson in the near future. We have much work to do when it comes to building a better Manitoba.”
